Researchers from the University of Bath and King's College London (KCL) have discovered that hydrogen sulfide, a volcanic gas, could be the key to a new, effective therapy.

But here's where it gets controversial... Current treatments, such as oral antifungal pills and topical products, have their limitations. Topical treatments, while safer, require lengthy applications and often fail to completely eradicate the infection.
The main challenge? Most medications struggle to penetrate the nail's dense structure, leaving the fungi or bacteria untouched. This is where hydrogen sulfide steps in as a promising alternative.
Research teams have identified H2S as a small, naturally occurring gas that can effortlessly pass through the nail plate, outperforming existing topical drugs. Previous studies suggested its ease of movement through nail tissue, and now, new findings reveal its powerful antimicrobial activity. It can kill a wide range of pathogens, including fungal species resistant to common antifungal medications.
In laboratory experiments, researchers used a compound that releases hydrogen sulfide, and the results were impressive. The gas disrupts microbial energy production, causing irreversible damage to the cells and ultimately eliminating the fungi causing the infection.
Dr. Albert Bolhuis from the University of Bath's Department of Life Sciences believes this discovery could lead to a highly effective topical treatment, overcoming the limitations of current therapies.
"With its ability to reach the infection site efficiently and its unique mode of action, a topically applied hydrogen sulfide medicine could be a game-changer for nail infections. Our research paves the way for an innovative and compelling alternative treatment."
While hydrogen sulfide has a strong odor and some toxicity, researchers emphasize that the concentrations needed for treatment are likely safe, and proper formulation can minimize any unpleasant smells.
The team is now working towards developing a topical treatment suitable for patients within the next five years. Professor Stuart Jones, Director of the Centre for Pharmaceutical Medicine Research at KCL, is optimistic: "We're excited to translate these findings into an innovative product to treat nail infections."
