Inside Story: Former Employee's Trial for Stealing Superior's Jewelry (2026)

A shocking case of workplace theft has come to light, leaving many questions and a trail of controversy. A former administrative assistant's alleged crime has sent shockwaves through the community.

Nurfaraein Shahruddin, 35, appeared in court, facing charges of stealing jewelry worth RM37,000 from her superior at the Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ). The incident, which occurred on May 27, 2025, at the Melaka Mall Complex, has sparked a legal battle and raised eyebrows.

The accused, Nurfaraein, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Nur Afiqah Radhiah Zainurin. According to the charge sheet, she is accused of stealing her superior's jewelry, valued at a significant amount, during working hours. This act, if proven, could land her in prison for up to 10 years under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

But here's where it gets intriguing: the victim only discovered the theft when she noticed her jewelry being auctioned on social media by a goldsmith. This led to a police investigation, where CCTV footage from the goldsmith's shop played a crucial role in identifying the accused.

During the court proceedings, a request for bail was made by the Deputy Public Prosecutor, proposing RM10,000. However, the defense argued for a lower amount, citing the accused's unemployment and her responsibility to care for her young children and elderly parents. Her husband, the sole earner, brings home RM1,500 monthly as a lorry driver.

The court granted bail, setting it at RM3,500 with one surety. The next court date is scheduled for January 21, 2026.

This case raises questions about workplace security, trust, and the impact of financial struggles. What do you think? Is there more to this story than meets the eye?
