A major water main rupture in Butler sparked emergency repairs and prompted a temporary disruption for about 30 customers. Pennsylvania American Water issued an alert indicating that crews were working to repair the break along 5th Avenue and West New Castle Street in the City of Butler, with the incident beginning around 7:30 a.m.
Video provided to Action News 4 captured a dramatic geyser-like fountain of water erupting from the street, and other footage showed at least one home sustaining water damage. A PA American Water spokesperson later told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that water service had been shut off in the affected area. Officials estimate that about 30 customers are affected by the break, and they expect to restore service by Saturday evening. Residents in the area may experience little to no water while crews work to repair the damage, and crews indicated the repair could take up to eight hours.
Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 dispatched a crew to the scene hours after the incident, and by midday, 5th Avenue had been closed to traffic. As of noon, the road remained blocked. This continues to be a developing story.
